A moderate amount of stress can help improve your performance" 的 "moderate amount of stress" 是指適量的壓力,"The film only achieved moderate box office success" 即票房表現平平。"So-and-so adopted a more moderate election platform in order to win over undecided voters" 即某某用溫和的政綱爭取游離選民支持。

The moderates in both political parties are likely to reach an agreement on this issue.

‧The new CEO has brought radical changes to the company.

‧These people hold radical views and do not support gradual (漸進的) reforms.

She was a radical at the early stage of her political career.

類似的字詞還有conservative(保守的或保守主義者)和liberal(自由主義的或自由主義者)。

John was hopeful of being elected as the class captain;也可形容給予人希望的事物,如:The increase in consumer spending is a hopeful sign for the economy.

名詞hopeful既指有望成功的人(例如presidential hopeful即有望成為總統的人),又指有志獲得成功者(例如Hundreds of young hopefuls have applied for the prestigious scholarship)。

There are many imponderables that could influence the election's results.

■Glossary

Moderate……
